WIFA Womens’ Football league: A look at the top 4 teams

After an enthralling month of exhilarating football, WIFA Women’s Football league is now down to four teams facing each other in a round-robin format to decide the eventual winners

As we head to the next round, let’s take a quick look

PIFA Sports Club

The Defending Champions are the strongest contenders once again, dominating their opponent throughout their campaign. PIFA has an absolute wall of defense having not conceded even a single goal in the campaign while their strike force has been on top form scoring 40 goals, led by the league’s leading goal scorer – Sasmita Behera

Mumbai Knights

One of the top favorites, Mumbai Knights has been on a roll too, and are the top contenders for the title. Like PIFA, Mumbai Knights too haven’t faced a loss in this campaign. In fact, the Steven Dias-led side had earlier cleaned swiped the Mumbai League to qualify for the competition and are yet to face defeat this season. Star striker Priyanka Sujeesh has been top form with 11 goals so far, just one behind league top scorer Sasmita. She has been ably supported by Valencia D’mello with 8 goals.

Warriors of Kolhapur

The Kolhapur champions started on high with four wins on a trot until they hit a roadblock with back-to-back losses against Pune-based Aspire FC and PIFA SC. A win against Puneri Warriors confirmed their top 4 places. The Kolhapur outfit has been a strong unit, and even in losses against the top teams they had shown enough fight. It was Kolhapur warriors who became the first team to score past the Mumbai Knights’s defense when they took an unexpected lead in the final league game. Expect some surprises in the League stage.

Kenkre FC

A stalwart in Mumbai Football, Kenkre FC had a poor start to the campaign losing the tournament opener. However, the club recovered quickly to pick up crucial wins including an important win over Aspire FC which allowed them to qualify for the top four spot edging the Pune side on head to head win record after both sides ended at the same point. Ankush and Nishka Prakash have been the standout players for the club with eight and seven goals respectively.
