Maharashtra comprehensively defeated Sikkim 5-0 in their last group stage game of the ongoing Santosh Trophy 2019 in Ludhiana (Punjab) to stay in contention of reaching the next round. It was indeed a great outing for Rithesh Inumula’s side who left no stones unturned to pick up their form when it mattered the most.
After going winless in the first two games against Karnataka and Assam, Maharashtra bounced back with a 2-1 win over Punjab which laid the foundation to today’s victory against Sikkim. Aman Gaikwad opened the scoring in the first-half before Leander Dharmai and Vinod Pandey chipped in one goal each to put Maharashtra 3-0 up at the break.
Maharashtra’s top-scorer Arif Shaikh continued his red-hot form by adding two more goals in the second-half, making it six goals in just four games. This ruthless display helped Maharashtra to improve their goal-difference as they have already put their one foot in the next round with Karnataka vs Punjab all set to be contested later today in Ludhiana.
