AIFF’s Referee development programs are designed to produce qualified Indian referees at all levels for domestic and international competitions, and promote refereeing as a career.
AIFF and WIFA are committed to building a key strong support structure of Refereeing, with special focus on human capital through conducting development activities in grassroots, youth development, and professional matches to share the updated Laws of the Game (LOTG) knowledge and implementation of same across all levels.
Refereeing courses are aimed at educating the candidates on the laws that govern the game and developing the skills to implement them in the correct manner while officiating games. Theoretical and practical lessons are provided to develop the observation, decision making, communication and management skills of the candidates so as to deliver the highest standards of refereeing the game demands.
The WIFA conducts various referee development courses offered by the AIFF. These courses are based on a 5 tier system. Category 5 being the entry level and Category 1 being the top tier. The AIFF referees development courses provide candidates with an understanding of the ‘Laws of the Game’ and provide them with the practical skills to be a match official.
