Mumbai beat Kolhapur 4-0 to clinch WIFA’s Inter District Sub-Junior Girls Championship 2023-24

The 10th edition of the Inter District Football Championship for Sub-Junior Girls in Maharashtra proved to be an exciting spectacle, with teams from various districts converging in Jalgaon to battle for supremacy. Among the fierce competition, Mumbai emerged as the ultimate victors, showcasing exceptional skill and teamwork throughout the tournament.

Jalgaon hosted the Sub-Junior Girls’ Championship, attracting teams from across Maharashtra to vie for the coveted title. The tournament’s initial stages or qualifiers engaged 22 teams from the state, paving the way for the journey to the final.

Mumbai, Kolhapur, Pune and Nagpur were the four teams that made it to the semi-finals of the championship. Mumbai faced Pune in a nail-biting face-off that ended in a 1-1 tie in full-time, before securing their place in the final with a nerve-wracking 6-5 victory in penalties. Pune displayed commendable sportsmanship, making it a memorable match. On the other side, Kolhapur triumphed over Nagpur by a solitary goal in a closely contested semi-final.

On the final day of the competition, Pune and Nagpur battled for the third-place spot in a match that showcased Pune’s prowess. Pune emerged victorious with a 3-0 win, securing the bronze medal and adding another chapter to their journey in the tournament.

The Grand Finale on March 8, 2024, witnessed Mumbai facing off against Kolhapur in a clash of titans. Mumbai delivered a stellar performance, triumphing over Kolhapur with an impressive 4-0 scoreline. Sanvi’s brace and goals from Rizwana and Prisha sealed Mumbai’s victory and solidified their dominance in the championship.

Sanvi Chaubey, a standout player from Mumbai, claimed the Player of the Tournament award for her exceptional contributions. Her skills and leadership played a pivotal role in Mumbai’s success. Aarnaa Sindhav, representing Pune, stood out as the Top Scorer of the tournament impressively showcasing her knack for scoring and leaving an indelible mark on the competition.  Meanwhile Kolhapur’s Sai Bondge received the best defender award.

The 10th edition of the Inter District Football Championship for Sub-Junior Girls was a rollercoaster of emotions, with Mumbai ultimately emerging as deserving champions. The tournament not only showcased the talent of these young footballers but also highlighted the spirit of sportsmanship and the promising talent emerging from different districts of Maharashtra.
