East Bengal beat Air India to finish on 2nd spot

PUNE: Kingfisher East Bengal defeated Air India by a solitary goal in their last I-League match at the Balewadi Sports Complex in Pune on Saturday (May 5).

The victory helped East Bengal to end their engagements at the second spot — on 51 points from 26 matches. On the other hand, Air India finished on 32 points from 26 matches.

Brazilian striker Edmilson Marques made the difference between the two sides when he tapped in Australian striker Tolgay Ozbey’s low cross from the right.

Air India tried their best to find an equaliser but the East Bengal defence stood firm with Uga Okpara and Nirmal Chhetri guarding their forte. Takayuki Omi and captain Kali Alaudeen combined well to create chances, but there wasn’t much support upfront.

Mehtab Hussain was declared the Man-of-the-Match.
