Mumbai emerged as the champions of Maharashtra in the prestigious Western India Football Association (WIFA) Inter-District U-20 Men’s Championship 2025–26, capping off an intense and competitive tournament that featured participation from 35 districts and a total of 33 matches.
The tournament structure saw last season’s semifinalists—Kolhapur, Palghar, Raigad, and Yavatmal—receive direct entry into the quarterfinals, adding an extra layer of competition for the remaining teams battling through earlier rounds.
Mumbai’s Road to Glory
Mumbai’s journey this season was a story of redemption. After being eliminated in the second round last year, the team returned stronger and more determined. They played five matches en route to the final, registering dominant wins against Chandrapur, Buldhana, and Yavatmal with convincing margins. Pune provided a stern test, but Mumbai edged past them with a narrow 2-1 victory.
In the semifinal, Mumbai faced defending champions Kolhapur. Delivering one of their best performances of the tournament, Mumbai dominated the game and secured a commanding 3-0 win to book their place in the final.
The final against neighboring district Palghar was a tightly contested encounter. Both teams showcased resilience and skill, keeping the match level until the final moments. Deep into injury time, Mumbai earned a crucial corner, and Neev Chhipa rose to the occasion with a decisive header, sealing the championship for Mumbai.
Palghar’s Impressive Run
Runners-up Palghar had a commendable campaign. Entering directly into the quarterfinals, they faced a strong Nagpur side. After a hard-fought match with missed opportunities on both ends, the game was decided via penalties, where Palghar held their nerve to progress.
In the semifinal, Palghar delivered a dominant performance, defeating Raigad 3-1 to secure their spot in the final.
Kolhapur Claims Third Place
Kolhapur, the defending champions, had a challenging start to their campaign. In the quarterfinal against Sangli, they conceded first but made a strong comeback to win 2-1. However, their journey to the final was halted by Mumbai in the semifinal.
In the third-place playoff against Raigad, Kolhapur showed resilience once again, scoring two late goals to secure a 2-0 victory and finish third in the tournament.
The 2025–26 edition of the WIFA U-20 Inter-District Championship highlighted the growing competitiveness of youth football in Maharashtra, with emerging talents and thrilling matches throughout. Mumbai’s triumph stands as a testament to their determination, improvement, and ability to perform under pressure when it mattered most.
