On an eventful last day, St Stanislaus, St Mary’s and Zinobians lifted the U-14, U-16 and U-18 titles during WIFA’s Mahayudh Mumbai
leg held at the Supari Talao, Bandra on Thursday.
In the u-14 category final, St. Stanislaus ’A’ team beat St. Aloysius ‘A’ team by 2-0 to clinch the title. The St. Stanislaus School was the favorites to win the title in the u-14 category as they had placed as many as six teams in the category. Their ‘A’ team looked all set to win the title by registering comfortable wins over their opponents. They defeated Balmohan School in the first semi-final by 2-0 while St Aloysius defeated Beacon High School by 2-0. They possessed one of the strongest defence in the category. Their coach Trevor Fernandes was all in praise for the team who just delivered their best football when it mattered.
In the u-16 category, St. Mary’s Kalina beat Steadfast ‘A’ by 1-0 to take the u-16 title. The team possessed a good composure in the field throughout the tournament and didn’t falter under pressure. Their mental balance was superior to their opponents during the game and that enabled them to take the control of the games through the tournament. They defeated St. Andrew’s by 1-0 in first semi-final while Steadfast eased past St Anthony’s by 2-0.
The u-18 category was much tensely competed category of the tournament with teams like Companeroes, Millwall, Zinobian and Young stars competing each other for the 2 final spots. In the first semi-final, Young Stars beat local favorites Companeroes in an exciting penalty shoot-out. In the second semi-final Zinobian edged past Millwall by a solitary goal margin. The much sought after final match went down the wire to the penalties with the Zinobians beating the Young Stars by a margin of 3-2. Finalists of all centers will now play in a Mumbai final which will be played at a later stage.
